Volkswagen VW50500/50501
VW50500/50501 oils are Top Tier lower SAPS¹ lubricants designed for use in light duty direct injection diesel engines with unit injectors. In Europe, VW50400/50700 oils may also be used in many vehicle models where Volkswagen 50500 or 50501 is specified.
VW50500/50501 oils are typically high HTHS (≥ 3.5cP) SAE 5W-30 or 5W-40 based on API Group III base oils.
The main physical and chemical requirements for VW50500/50501 oils are shown below:
Requirement | Method | Unit | Limit |
HTHS viscosity | CEC L-36-A-90 | cP | ≥ 3.5 |
Sulphated Ash | DIN 51575 | %wt | ≤ 0.80 |
Phosphorus | DIN 51399-1 | %wt | ≥ 0.07 |
Sulphur | DIN 51399-1 | %wt | Report |
Evaporation loss (NOACK) | CEC L-40-A-93 | % | < 13 |
Total Base Number | DIN 51639-1 | mgKOH/g | ≥ 7.0 |
Note 1: SAPS refers to Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur, the levels of which are often restricted in the latest performance specifications.
VW50500/50501 is usually coupled with ACEA C3, MB229.51, MB229.52, MB29.31, BMW Longlife-04, GM dexos2™ and Porsche A40 (5W-40 only).
