ILSAC GF-6 Timeline
The official start of the International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC) GF-6 process in 2011 began when the specification was first discussed at an ILSAC API Lubricants Group Meeting. The Needs Statement was then developed and presented at the Auto Oil Advisory Panel (AOAP) meeting in February 2012.
The targeted first licensing date for ILSAC GF-6 and API SP was originally projected as January 2015, with 2016 as the mandatory first use date; however, the specification’s license date was delayed due to test development complications (GF-6 will include seven new engine tests).
In July 2019, the API officially announced May 1, 2020 as the first license date of the new ILSAC GF-6 and API SP specifications. The announcement was made through an official letter distributed to all API members.
