Daimler MB 228.31
MB 228.31 is a lower SAPS1 lubricant specification designed for use in high performance medium and heavy-duty diesel engines where a standard oil drain is suitable alongside the use of advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs).
MB 228.31 lubricants are typically SAE 15W-40, 10W-40 or 10W-30 viscosity grades primarily based on API Group II with low levels of API Group III base oils when required.
The main physical and chemical requirements for MB 228.31 are shown below:
|HTHS viscosity at 150°C||CEC L-36-A-90||cP||≥ 3.5|
|Sulphated Ash||ASTM D874||%wt||> 1.0|
|Phosphorus||ASTM D5185||%wt||≤ 0.12|
|Sulfur||ASTM D5185||%wt||≤ 0.4|
|Evaporation loss (NOACK) at 250°C||CEC L-40-93||%||≤ 13|
|Total Base Number||ASTM D2896||mgKOH/g||≥ 7.0|
Note 1: SAPS refers to Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur, the levels of which are often restricted in the latest performance specifications.
MB 228.31 is usually grouped with a range of other approvals. The most frequently seen approvals claimed in conjunction with MB 228.31 are ACEA E9, API CK-4, MAN M3775, MTU Type 2.1, Volvo VDS-4.5, Deutz DQC III-18 LA, Caterpillar ECF-3, Cummins CES 20086 & Detroit Diesel DFS 93K222.
