DTFR 15C120 (formerly MB228.52)

DTFR 15C120 (formerly MB 228.52) is a Top Tier low SAPS¹ lubricant specification designed for use in select Euro VI / US Tier 4 engines used in buses and industrial/off road applications where advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are fitted.

DTFR 15C120 oils are typically SAE 10W-40, 5W-30 or 10W-30 viscosity grades based on API Group III, Group III + II or Group III + Group IV base oils.

DTFR 15C120 shares many common characteristics with DTFR 15C110. The major difference between the two specifications is that MB 228.52 has a restriction on the level of calcium allowed in the lubricant and is designed for use in select applications/engines mentioned above.

The main physical and chemical requirements for DTFR 15C120 are shown below:

Requirement Method Unit Limit
HTHS viscosity at 150°C CEC L-36-A-90 cP ≥ 3.5
Sulphated Ash ASTM D874 %wt ≤ 1.0
Phosphorus ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.08
Sulfur ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.3
Calcium ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.15
Evaporation loss (NOACK) at 250°C CEC L-40-93 % ≤ 12
Total Base Number ASTM D2896 mgKOH/g ≥ 7.0

Note 1: SAPS refers to Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur, the levels of which are often restricted in the latest performance specifications.

DTFR 15C120 is usually grouped with a range of other approvals which may vary depending on the viscosity grade. The most frequently seen approvals claimed in conjunction with DTFR 15C120 are ACEA E6, CK-4, DTFR 15C110, MAN M3775, MTU Type 3.1, Volvo VDS-4.5 & Deutz DQC IV-18 LA.
