DTFR 15C110 (formerly MB228.51)

DTFR 15C110 (formerly MB 228.51) is a Top Tier low SAPS¹ lubricant specification designed for use in medium and heavy-duty diesel engines where advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are fitted. Because this specification sets high requirements for cleanliness and wear protection, alongside the ability to prolong the life aftertreatment systems it is widely recommended in Daimler Euro VI vehicles.

DTFR 15C110 lubricants are typically SAE 10W-40, 5W-30 or 10W-30 viscosity grades based on API Group III, Group III + II or Group III + Group IV base oils.

The main physical and chemical requirements for DTFR 15C110 are shown below:

Requirement Method Unit Limit
HTHS viscosity at 150°C CEC L-36-A-90 cP ≥ 3.5
Sulphated Ash ASTM D874 %wt > 1.0
Phosphorus ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.08
Sulfur ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.3
Evaporation loss (NOACK) at 250°C CEC L-40-93 % ≤ 12
Total Base Number ASTM D2896 mgKOH/g ≥ 7.0

Note 1: SAPS refers to Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur, the levels of which are often restricted in the latest performance specifications.

DTFR 15C110 is usually grouped with a range of other approvals which may vary depending on the viscosity grade. The most frequently seen approvals claimed in conjunction with DTFR 15C110 are ACEA E6, API CK-4/CJ-4, MAN M3677/M3477 &/or M3775, Scania Low Ash/LDF-4, MTU Type 3.1, Volvo VDS-4.5 (or VDS-4) & Deutz DQC IV-18 LA.
