Caterpillar ECF-2
Caterpillar ECF-2 is a lubricant specification designed for use in medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines. This specification is intended to be used in engines where advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are not fitted. These engines would typically align with the Stage IIIA and prior European off-highway emissions standards and North American emission standards prior to Tier 4.
Caterpillar ECF-2 lubricants are typically SAE 15W-40, 10W-40 or 10W-30 viscosity grades, based on API Group I or Group II base oils and with low levels of API Group III when required.
The main physical and chemical requirements for Caterpillar ECF-2 are shown below:
Requirement | Method | Unit | Limit |
HTHS Viscosity at 150°C | ASTM D4683 | cP | ≥ 3.5 |
Sulfated Ash | ASTM D874 | %wt | ≤ 1.5 |
Phosphorus | ASTM D5185 | %wt | Rate & Report |
Sulfur | ASTM D5185 | %wt | Rate & Report |
Volatility (NOACK) at 250°C | ASTM 5800 | % | ≤ 15 |
Caterpillar ECF-2 is usually grouped with a range of other approvals. The most frequently seen approvals claimed in conjunction with Caterpillar ECF-2 are ACEA E7, API CI-4, MB 228.3, MTU Type 2, Volvo VDS-3, Mack EO-N and EO-M Plus, Renault RLD-2, Deutz DQC III-18 and Cummins CES 20076/20077/20078.
