ACEA E8-22

ACEA E8-22 oils are low SAPS1 Ultra High Performance Diesel (UHPD) lubricants designed for use in severe duty, long drain applications.

ACEA recommends their use in vehicles fitted with aftertreatment systems for the reduction of particulate matter (DPFs) and oxides of nitrogen (EGR and/or SCR), in combination with low sulphur diesel fuel.

ACEA E8-22 replaces ACEA E6-16 in the latest update of the sequences.

The main physical and chemical requirements for ACEA E8-22 are shown below:

Requirement Method Unit Limit
HTHS viscosity CEC L-36-90 mPa.s ≥ 3.5
Sulphated Ash ASTM D874 %wt ≤ 1.0
Phosphorus ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.08
Sulphur ASTM D5185 %wt ≤ 0.3
Evaporation loss (NOACK) CEC L-40-93 % ≤ 13
Total Base Number ASTM D2896 mgKOH/g ≥ 7

ACEA E8-22 is typically grouped with a range of other approvals which may vary depending on the viscosity grade. Some examples of approvals that can be targeted in conjunction with E8-22 are API CK-4, Daimler MB-approvals MB228.51/MB228.52, MAN M3677/M3477 &/or M3775, Scania LDF-4, MTU Type 3.1, Volvo VDS-4.5 & Deutz DQC IV-18 LA.

Typically, OEM approvals outlined by Daimler, MAN, MTU, Volvo and Deutz will build on top of an ACEA E8-22 baseline with additional performance requirements in areas such as wear protection.

Note 1 : SAPS refers to Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur, the levels of which are often restricted in the latest performance specifications.

Changes

ACEA E8-22 introduces additional requirements in comparison to ACEA E6-16.
