BS VI Implications on Vehicle and Lubricant Technology
Complying with BS VI emission norms has been achieved by a collaborative effort of changes in fuel quality level and changes in vehicle hardware.
- Fuel: Sulphur in fuel has been reduced from 50 ppm to 10 ppm level and this new fuel is now available in all fuel stations across India
- Vehicle hardware: Depending on type of vehicle (truck, car or motorcycle) and the type of fuel the vehicle is run on (diesel, petrol or CNG), vehicle manufacturers have adopted different strategies to achieve BS VI emission norms.
- Lubricant: Since all the changes in vehicle hardware mentioned above are related to engine, the impact of BS VI emission norms is on engine oils only. Driveline lubricants such as transmission oils and axle oils are not impacted by BS VI.
